Young Disabled Unit - nursing care for younger adults (under 65 years)
Total Care consists of five individual units within a home. Each unit has its own identity with a purpose to provide tailored, focused care by a dedicated team of specialised nursing and care staff.

Four bathrooms are available for resident’s use of which two are equipped with Parker baths and two are walk-in/wheel-in shower rooms.
The Young Disabled Unit is staffed by a nurse manager supported by a team of qualified nurses and care assistants who possess a range of experience and training in supporting younger adults with complex needs and disabilities. The carers provide an ideal mix of experience and maturity coupled with enthusiasm and vitality that makes for a friendly unit which actively encourages residents and their families to be involved in the planning and delivery of care.
Care across the day and night provided on the unit and each resident is allocated a named nurse who is a keyworker and will lead the team of carers in implementing resident's personal care plans.


Total Care has built strong links with members of the Multi-disciplinary Team in our area. In addition to General Practitioners, we also have access to Community Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Opticians, Dentists, Speech Therapists and Podiatrists and for those under his direct care, a Consultant in Neuro-rehabilitation holds a three-monthly clinic on-site. We work closely with colleagues in Adult Social Care where required.
As part of the Young Disabled Unit, we have an excellent therapy and activity team. This consists of a Physiotherapist, activity co-ordinator and a Complementary Therapist. The Physiotherapist addresses identified physical treatments according to assessed individual needs. The activity co-ordinator provides group and individual sessions. A treatment room is available for massage therapy, aromatherapy along with a range of treatments from our Complementary Therapist.
The leisure and social facilities within this unit include two lounges; one with widescreen television and another quieter area, a music system for social use. The dining area is situated off the main lounge and as well as providing a comfortable area in which to take meals, is also used by residents during the day who wish to socialse and interact. A patio and garden area is readily accessible. A specially adapted kitchen is available to encourage clients to maintain their independence wherever appropriate. A designated smoking area is in place on the YDU for residents who wish to smoke and/ or vape (with appropriate risk assessments in place).
There are regular social activities including karaoke and guest performers. In addition a range of appropriate activities are held daily throughout the year.
The Young Disabled Unit supports a wide range of abilities and provides excellent person-centred care, grounded in our mission statement to support our residents to be as independent, healthy, safe and well as possible. In order that the care and facilities meet the needs of everyone in the unit, resident meetings are held every three months so that clients can take an active role in the enhancement and development of the services offered.
